Kohunlich

Last week I added to the growing list of ancient Mayan cities I've visited with a trip to Kohunlich in mainland Mexico. It was a two-hour-long drive through the mangrove swamps surrounding the port to the uncovered city.

The site is famous for its temple of the masks. From the top you have a great view of the layout peaking through the trees.

On the tour the guide said the landscape surrounding the temples would have been cleared away completely because to build the temples and adminstrative buildings, they would have had to burn a lot of wood to make the lime used as mortar in the bricks. Here's the temple of the masks.
